How To Upgrade Firmware Of Mobiles

Firmware is an integral part of any phone and is responsible interaction between you and the hardware. Keeping your mobile firmware updated is very important as new firmware upgrades bring in new features to your cell phone and also iron out bugs that existed in the previous versions. Also they improve speed and performance of your phone.

Nokia, the leading cell phone manufacturer company, a couple of years back introduced the Nokia Software Updater software that lets you update your mobile firmware from your PC itself. Earlier you had to take your phone to the service station to get the job done.

So lets begin by looking at the various steps involved in updating the firmware of your mobile phone :

Step 1 : Download and install Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater

You first need to download the latest versions of Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater from Nokia’s official website. After downloading them, install both the softwares on your PC. Nokia PC Suite will be used to backing up and restoring the data of your phone and Nokia Software Updater will flash the firmware if your phone.

Step 2 : Connect your phone to PC and backup data

Before flashing the firmware of the phone with a new one, we need to ensure that all our data on the phone is backed up, because flashing the phone with new firmware deletes all the data present in the phone memory which can range from contacts, messages, notes etc.

Connect your phone to PC and fire up the Nokia PC Suite application which will detect the phone.

Nokia PC suite provides you the option to backup the data by using the Nokia Content Copier application which comes with the PC Suite and selecting the data backup option. You will then be guided through a 5-step wizard which will assist you in backing up the data to your PC.

Step 3 : Start Nokia Software Updater

Before starting it, you need to ensure that you do not receive any phone calls midway this process as it can ruin your phone and brick it. So either use a new SIM or flash the firmware at a time you are sure you will not receive calls!

Start the Nokia Software Updater software which will detect your phone model and search the database for the latest version available on the internet. If a new version exists, then you can start the process of upgrading the firmware. It first downloads the whole firmware and then flashes your old one with the new one. The flashing part takes only about a couple of minutes or so.

Step 4 : Restore data backup

After the firmware has been updated successfully, your phone will restart with the new firmware. You then need to restore all the data that had been lost from phone memory. The process is similar to Step No.2, where you need to connect phone to PC and launch Nokia Content Copier application from the PC Suite and select the restore backup option to restore the data.
