How To Upgrade iPod Touch Firmware To v2.0

The v2.0 software was released by Apple for both old iPhone and iPod Touch a couple of days ago. The v2.0 software brings the ability to install softwares from the App Store to your iPod Touch or your iPhone. The upgrade to v2.0 for the old iPhone is easier than that for the iPod Touch as the upgrade is free.

The v2.0 software for the iPod Touch is priced at $9.95 by Apple. So make sure you keep your credit card ready to make the payment. Follow the instructions below and you will be playing with the new v2.0 in a matter of few minutes.

Step 1 : Download and install iTunes 7.7

This new version of iTunes was released by Apple specifically for the v2.0 software upgrade and also contains the App Store. You need to download and install this version to be able to continue with the upgrade. Download iTunes from here.

Step 2 : Connect your iPod Touch to your Mac/PC

Plug in the USB cable and connect your iPod Touch to your Mac/PC and launch the iTunes v7.7 that you just installed in Step 1 and make sure it gets detected by it.

Step 3: Backup!

This is the most important step that is forgotten by most users. The upgrade to v2.0 software will delete all your songs, playlists etc. So make sure you backup your data by syncing it with iTunes so that you can restore it later after the upgrade.

Step 4 : Select your country

You will need to select your country to be able to make the payment. The option to select the country can be found at the bottom of the iTunes store.

Step 5 : Check for update and make payment

Now click on your iPod Touch in the source pane and then click on the Summary tab. Now check for update to your iPod Touch. You will then have to make the payment using your Credit Card to be able to start the download.

Step 6 : Download and install the update

You will be asked for confirmation to download the update and install it. The v2.0 software update is 226.6 MB large, so the download time will depend on the speed of your internet connection. iTunes will itself install the update after the download and a restart to your iPod Touch will bring it up with the latest v2.0 software.

Step 7 : Restore the data

After the successful upgrade, you can restore the songs, playlists etc back to your iPod Touch by syncing it with iTunes.

This is it! You have successfully upgraded your iPod Touch to v2.0 software and you can now install apps from the App Store.
