Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 Review

Ergonomic series of keyboards and mice from Microsoft isn’t a new thing, and they have been hugely successful. Microsoft continues the legacy with its Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 by incorporating all the faults with previous models to take consumer satisfaction to a new high. It does not have the split in keyboard but that does not affect the ergonomics of the keyboard at all. Lets have a look at it in detail.

Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 specifications :

  • Keyboard Dimensions : 16″ x 0.75″ x 7″
  • Mouse Dimensions : 4.5″ x 0.75″ x 2.5″
  • Wireless technology : 27 MHz Radio Frequency
  • No. of mouse buttons : 2
  • Mouse sensitivity : 1000 dpi
  • Battery life : 6 months
  • Power source : 2 AA batteries for each
  • Warranty : 5-years
  • Approx. price : $110

Ergonomics is the last thing you expect to go bad with Microsoft’s design. The mouse has a deep thumb rest and an odd design which fits beautifully into the hand. Both the mouse and keyboard have clear chromed transparent plastics which gives it a look similar to what Aero does to Windows Vista. Hardware to go along with software design, that a first!

The keyboard and mouse have full fledged buttons for daily use. The mouse features five buttons which can be programmed through the control panel applet. The keyboard has 31 programmable keys which are spread over the left and top part of the keyboard. These also include touch sensitive keys which can be used to launch programs.

Both the devices work through a single wireless receiver which is a 2.4 GHz wireless receiver, about the size of a flash drive. It has a range of 30-feet, good enough for most users. The mouse has rechargeable batteries which can be charged by a kind of dock that connects to the bottom of the mouse. The keyboard uses regular AA batteries.

Microsoft’s IntelliPoint and IntelliType Pro are the two softwares which control the mouse and keyboard respectively. The keyboard not only works with Windows, but is also Mac compatible. The softwares can be used to change general settings and assign functions to the programmable buttons.

Microsoft has customised the bundle for Windows Vista with Flip 3D making its way into the mouse too. But the combo works well with Windows XP too. The performance of both the mouse and keyboard is amazing. The keyboard as expected is highly ergonomic and comfortable to use. Loads of programmable keys can be really helpful at times, and you will get used to them over time.

The mouse works well and without any glitches. The grip of the mouse is extremely good and it slides smoothly across the surface. The high sensitivity leads to better accuracy, boon for gamers. The side buttons are an useful addition which enhance functionality. Overall a pleasant experience with both the mouse and keyboard.

Pros :

  • Large number of function keys
  • Extremely ergonomic and comfortable
  • Great looks
  • Mac compatible

Cons :

  • Non-rechargeable batteries in keyboard
  • Touch buttons bit tricky to use

Final Thoughts

The Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 7000 is a great combination of ergonomic keyboard and mouse. The mouse works smoothly and precisely on most surfaces. The keyboard has huge number of functional keys which help in the long run. Overall a great combo to invest your money in.

My Rating : 4/5
