Hi

I just upgraded my pc from xp to vista, when i first my computer it was with xp, my model is Acer Aspire RC500 and i am just wondering where i could find drivers for my pc to adjust the screen resolution which is huge. And is there any way to change screen resolution manually as i cannot change it through appearance menu.

thanks

Roshan,
You seem to have a very outdated Configuration to run Vista. While your processor and RAM may be enough to run Vista, Your Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 400 Video card will not be able to handle Windows Vista’s heavy requirements.  Continue reading ‘Vista Display Drivers and Mobile Phone Query’

How to make a Crossover Ethernet Cable

RJ45 ConnectorThis guide is a DIY to create a crossover ethernet cable. While a normal ethernet cable is used to connect a PC to a router / modem / network, a crossover cable can be used to enable direct communication between two computers. This is a very low cost solution to enable communication between two computers directly without the need of intermediate hardware. It is for file sharing, LAN gaming and controlling remote computers.

A normal ethernet cable allows only one way data transmissions while a crossover cable allows both way data transmission.
This is achieved by connecting the transmission pins (TX+ & TX-) of one end to the receiving pins(RX+ & RX-) of the other end. In a normal ethernet cable, this is done internally by the hub / switch or the router.

In a normal RJ45 / CAT5 ethernet cable, the pins are marked as 1. TX+, 2. TX-, 3. RX+, 6. RX- at both ends. To create a crossover ethernet cable we just connect the TX pins to the corresponding RX pins. In effect, we swap wires at the pins 1-3 and 2-6. ASUS AI Nap and Permissions Error Query

A couple more queries on the Ask-Us page, where you get your hardware related queries solved.

The first one is by Liam :

Do you know what does ASUS AI Nap does exactly?

A pretty short query there! ASUS AI Nap was a feature introduced by ASUS in its motherboards. To put it simply, it is an extension of the Standby feature present in Windows. When you put your PC in standby mode, your PC turns off the monitor and hard disk but keeps the session alive and restores it when you need it. ASUS went a step further and enhanced this feature. It made the PC run in low power consumption mode with the display turned off but hard disk,CPU still running but not in full throttle. This is a great boon for people who need to download a lot of stuff as they can use this feature to lower the power consumption but at the same time continuing with their downloads.

Tips on buying a wireless broadband router

A lot of you must be contemplating buying a wireless router, but the market is flooded with numerous wireless routers and making a choice becomes tougher. But there are a few things to keep in mind before making a choice as that really helps in the long run.

First you need to know the difference between an ordinary wireless router and a wireless broadband router. A simple wireless router is used to make a wired internet connection wireless. It can not connect to your ISP and for that purpose you need to use a broadband router. A wireless broadband router combines both the functionalities in one device. It connects to your ISP and makes your internet connection wireless. So you need to be careful when choosing one for yourself to match your requirement.

Following are some of the tips that you need to keep in mind before deciding on a wireless broadband router :

Tip 1 : Determine wireless standard used by the connecting devices

This is the foremost thing to be determined. You need to know the wireless standard supported by the devices that you are going to hook up with the router. The three common standard supported by almost all devices are 802.11a/b/g. But off-late a new standard 802.11n has been introduced which supports faster transfer speeds and enhanced connectivity. But unfortunately not many new devices(PCs etc) support this standard as it is relatively new. So if you are not going to hook any 802.11n device even in future then it does not make sense to invest in a 802.11n compatible router as they are relatively expensive.

How to: Apply Thermal Compound on Processors.

Some components in a PC can get very hot and excessive temperatures can be harmful to the working of the computer. They may cause logical errors in many internal devices. The components which are the biggest source of heat are the processor and graphic cards. It is always preferable to keep the temperatures in your PC low in order to keep the CPU operation stable and increase the life of the components. However as the clock speeds of the processors go on increasing, the temperatures go on increasing and we have to find alternate solutions to keep the temperatures down.

The 2 most common ways to battle heat are:
1. Using Fans - To facilitate air circulation in the cabinet
2. Using Heatsinks and thermal paste - For better conduction of heat Continue reading ‘How to: Apply Thermal Compound on Processors.’

How to install a SATA hard drive

Most of the hard drives in use these days are SATA/SATA II. The SATA standard was adopted quite some time back. The advantages offered by the new SATA disks are many – greater speed & bandwidth, more reliability and hot-swapping.

Another advantage is that the SATA power & data cables are much smaller than the corresponding IDE cables and hence prevent unnecessary clutter in the cabinet maximising free air flow.

Additionally, there are no master-slave configuration or jumper settings required as in IDE drives.

To use SATA hard drives, you need:

1. A SATA enabled motherboard. (You can alternately use a PCI SATA Adapter)

2. A SATA hard drive. (duh?)

3. The SATA connectors that come bundled with the hard drive.

Installing a SATA hard drive is very similar to installing a IDE drive, actually easier. Continue reading ‘How to install a SATA hard drive’
