Remote Access and ADSL Router Query

The first query is by johan3000 :

Hi DigitGeek Team,

How can I access (remote access) my computer in my office from home easily (using mobile phone)? cause office has free internet access (unlimited) but not at home NOT!

thanks!

You seem to have muddled up everything. You wish to access your office PC from home so that you can use the office internet from home? If that is what you intend to do, then you are mistaken as it is not possible to access the office internet at home. Yes, you can access the office PC from home but not use the office internet.

This is because of the simple reason that when you access anything on the other PC through your home PC then it is your home internet connection that gets used, internet is provided through wired connections (wireless have short range) so to access an internet connection you need to have physical access to the wire which is impossible in your case.

However, if this is not what you meant, find below how to remotely access PCs using windows.

Using the remote access feature built in both Windows XP and Windows Vista, you can easily access files, settings etc from one PC to another. For this both the PCs should be turned on and have access to internet. Follow the steps given on Microsoft’s site to set up the Remote access from here.

The second query is by David :

Hi, i am using a wireless ADSL at home to connect to the internet with my personal laptop and it was stolen. Now i am using a company laptop and when i activate wireless connection, it shows that is connected but i cannot open any website.

This problem commonly arises due to DNS issues. Make sure you have entered the DNS servers, IP address etc in the TCP/IP properties of your wireless connection. Another thing that could lead to this problem is your browser settings. In a company, the internet is usually accesses using a proxy server rather than direct connection. So most likely the browser must be having those settings entered into it, thereby making it unable to connect to the internet. I am sure it is one of these two issues that is causing problems. If you can ping sites then there is a problem with the browser else with the connection you have set up.
