ShadesCases for iPod Touch/iPhone Review

The market for iPod/iPhone cases has grown exponentially over the last couple of years and manufacturers have come up with innovative ideas for their range of cases. ShadesCases is one such company which came up with the idea of a “Shade” which according to the company is neither a skin nor a case.

So what exactly is it? It is basically a very thin plastic case that can be put on your iPod/iPhone to protect like a skin does. While this does provide benefits of both the type of products, it does have its shortcomings. Read on to find out more about these special cases.

Shade is a single piece of specially cut out plastic case that fits your iPod/iPhone perfectly without losing out on functionality. The shade however does not have a cut out for the power button but that does not hamper its usage as it still works well inside the shade. But the functionality of the volume keys on the iPhone is reduced as there is no cut out for it.

The screen has a clear transparent plastic but I was not too impressed by the quality as it reduces the charm of using the gorgeous touch display. In fact the front and back are made from different plastics with the back part being a bit more thicker. Except the display portion, the rest of the shade is made of a single color and is available in 8 different colors.

The advantages of such a design are many. First it is a single piece of plastic unlike the two pieces of skins that are available. Second is the ease with which you can slide/remove the shade from your iPod/iPhone. Skins do not give you that liberty. It comes in a variety of colors for you to choose from and can give a completely different look to your device. It offers full protection for the device as it does not leave any uncovered area. It has cut outs for the buttons which ensures full functionality. And lastly, Home button also has protection which is generally omitted in the case of skins.

The shade has only one main disadvantage which is its plastic quality used for the display which makes using the touch display a little less enjoyable and also reduces the visibility of the display. The front portion does not add to the looks of the device like the back part which is sparkle embedded.

Final Thoughts

The ShadeCases are an innovative way to protect your iPod/iPhone along with giving them a cool new color. Ease of use, full protection, perfect cut outs are some of its major advantages. If you can live with reduced screen functionality, then you should get one for yourself right away.
